Too Sushi or Not Too Sushi

Prior to the lockdown in February when life seemed “normal”, I accepted an invite to Yamitsuki. Now I am basically a fish lover but I’ve always preferred my fish well cooked (or so I thought). Naby, like me, is not big on the idea of raw fish so he refused to accompany me (well, his loss). Since Aari was close to her wedding date we decided to make a lunch date of it and explore if our palates could get acquainted with the raw fish taste. Plus, mummy agreed to see to Ilham so I could have time off. Aari too was a virgin to raw fish. Yamitsuki is situated in a complex on 55 Van Vuuren Road in Bedfordview and while you think the sushi experience is anything but exemplary you are wrong. So you have a choice of dining at the sushi bar, outside or in the actual restaurant which is a tad bit more classy than the sushi bar. Aari and I were overwhelmed by the menu of sushi choices that awaited us. From fire sushi, classic sushi, and poke bowls we definitely couldn’t choose easily.

We were given a R500 card and could indulge in the delicacies of our choice. We roped in the friendly waitress to assist in making a decision. Although we were so ready to try the fire sushi, we were kindly informed it does incorporate the use of alcohol and we steer clear of that route due to kosher standards.  So we decided to go with a five-course meal with prawns to satisfy our hunger. Also, in order to gain a full Master Chef tasting experience the full five-course meal experience is necessary. To accompany our meal we ordered some of the restaurant’s signature shakes (whoever said you cannot drink milkshake and eat fish told a fib). Lastly, we ordered some sushi to get an authentic sushi experience.

The food was delicious. The prawns were cooked delicately in such a vast array of sauces but in a way that the true prawn taste remained. The Japanese tea was a refreshing starter with tofu soup being the icing on the cake for me. The soup had a subtle fishy taste but nothing too overbearing. Dumplings are a must for the experience and I am personally a lover of well-cooked dumplings. The softness of the dumpling complemented by the savoury and salty taste of the fish filling... mmmmmm... my tummy is satisfied. Sushi for beginners was great. It was my second time trying sushi and the first time ruined sushi for me. The sushi at this place is heavenly and with so many choices you simply cannot go wrong. So the experience was an incredible tasting journey and the incredible experience was reinforced by the kindness of the staff and their enthusiasm to help. Any meal that ends with a fortune cookie has to be a fortunate one. This is an ideal visit for a Sunday afternoon brunch with the family. Due to lockdown the place has stepped it up by allowing for takeaways and take-home meals. Please support them as it is certainly worth the well. It is definitely worth a drive to Bedfordview.

Now that restaurants are set to open there is no better time to take a trip back towards 'normality' or something close.
