The Blog takes the UAE- Walters Coffee Roastery

Today is flying by relatively fast as tomorrow is back to school meaning being a teacher again. All good things (holidays in particular) must come to an end. If you've been following my statuses on Instagram and Whatsapp, you would know that I had a rather adventurous holiday spending the duration of it  touring the different emirates in the UAE. This holiday, however, was a blog related working one as well. Whilst staying in Dubai, I was hosted by Walters Coffee Roastery  which is situated in The Dubai Mall (which is the largest mall in the world). I went into this review totally clueless about Walters Coffee and what it is that they had to offer (due to being on a holiday vibe, I didn't spend any time researching the brand before venturing into the store).  This proved highly beneficial as Walters is in no way your standard coffee shop and I had much to learn.

Background on Walters which I learnt
Walters has not originated in Dubai but rather was founded in Istanbul. This scientifically inclined coffee shop values coffee and the chemistry behind a good cup of coffee.  Mentioning science and chemistry, the concept of Walters was based on the American hit series "Breaking Bad". Walter being a main character in the show hence the reason why the shop is called Waters.  Deniz Kosan- the founder of the coffee shop was a die hard "Breaking Bad" fan and used ideas from the show to inspire his shop. If you've watched "Breaking Bad", you'd know coffee plays a key role in the series thus the development of this one-of- a-kind coffee shop. I would recommend fans of the series to certainly visit Walters. I would also suggest visiting Walters if you never watched "Breaking Bad" as the visit may certainly stir up your curiosity and make you want to watch the series.

Decor of Walters
The inner setting of Walters uses science related elements from the "Breaking Bad" series  namely beakers, test tubes and the periodic table of elements. The store also has a glass laboratory situated directly in the middle surrounded by the seating tables and chairs. The store is painted in coats of yellow, white, grey and black making the interior resemble the the context of the series.   Fans of the series will understand the use of this particular colour scheme as well as the reason why there is a man dressed in a  yellow lab coat on the picture that stands against the wall. The coffee shop is comfortable to sit in. The setting in its entirety is a taste of something different and you can't help but continuously glance around in shock at how cleverly lab related tools and elements have been put to  use in the store.

A taste of something different
Walters originated in Istanbul which was home to one of the first ever coffee houses back in the 16th century. Walters, however, shows the evolution of the traditional coffee shop- being far from your standard coffee shop. The temperature at which coffee boils,  the grinder pressure and the consistencies of the compounds needed to make coffee are all considered at Walters and hence they decipher that coffee making is indeed a science. What's the difference with this coffee? Well, the coffee contains no sugar or milk. Yes you read right.. At Walters they refuse to ruin the essential flavour of pure coffee by adding in milk or sugar.  Good news their cakes are filled with sugar though (for sugar lovers like me).
Their menu is in the form of a periodic table featuring a range of hot and cold beverages.
Select guests can expect to have hot ice brought to their tables to add to the science related theme of the store. The hot ice experience is amazing because the whole table becomes full of smoke and you really feel like you in the lab working on a scientific experiment. No lab goggles needed!

I was treated to both a hot beverage and a cold one. To drink the hot beverage, at first I had to adjust my palate slightly to the raw taste of freshly grounded pure coffee. For me the thought of not taking sugar and milk in my cup made me squirm (I usually put nothing less than 4 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee).  After a few sips, the taste grew on me. There's something so healthy about the rich, strong taste of coffee free from any flavoring. I was used to the strong coffee taste by the time I got to drink the cold beverage. So I enjoyed the cold beverage much more than the hotter one. I must admit that presentation of desserts and drinks are one for the books and surely noteworthy. To know the essence of richly raw coffee, one needs to get a sip of Walters. The experience itself is worth it. For science lovers, this is a coffee date so worth it.
