A Taste of Shangri -La - Fusionista Spa
Who would have thought that in the middle of the normal Randburg lies an experience out of this world- literally. When you drive past the Fusionista spa, the outside appears just like any normal building but inside lies a heavenly place waiting to be discovered. From the minute the guard opens the entrance gates you know that you are in for something different. Fusionista offers you your pass into paradise or Shangri La.
The spa and restaurant is the brain child of David Smith who has sourced elements from all around the world (far and wide) to make this one spa experience you will never forget. Each and every massage room contains elements from nature or something unique to mimic that feeling of escaping from reality and disappearing into the calm wilderness of the seventh heaven. I must admit that when the blog got invited to review the spa, I went in blindfolded (not knowing what to expect-in fact not expecting much). Upon entry into the spa, I had my eyes opened to the luxurious relaxation that awaited. Needless to say the reality of the spa far surpasses your expectations and to obtain that feeling, the spa is well worth the visit. We all know how incredible it is to get more than what you expect. WOW!
Upon arrival I was greeted by the friendly therapists and got to get a glimpse of the products used by the spa as well as got to grips with the ritual and customs of the spa. I was thereafter taken for an all round tour of the entire spa before I could to put my feet down and try out the spa treatments. The spa envisions to bring the mythical place of Shangri-La to life. Shangri -La is a place directly out of the imagination of 1933 novelist James Hilton. Shangri-La according to the novel is the Tibetan paradise that is cut off from the rest of the world. People in Hilton's mythical paradise is believed to live for hundreds of years without aging. Now imagine finding Nirvana in Johannesburg just a few KM from your home. Cut off from the hum drum of normalcy is exactly what you feel when arriving at Fusionista spa.
Massage Rooms
Each massage room is different from the other. Although minimal details may be repeated, each massage room boasts its own unique style and is unlike anything you've ever seen before. Each room is ideal for a specific type of massage but the room choice is also based on your personal preferences.
The Bamboo Massage Room: Bamboos are evergreen and just like this the bamboo massage room will have you feeling in touch with nature while making the people seeing your whatsapp status green with envy. The Bamboo Massage room is most apt for indulging in the spa's bamboo massage
The Wind Chime Room: The room contains wind chimes of varying lengths and types which jingle away when the fans are turned on. The soothing sound of the wind whilst enjoying a massage is enough to give you goosebumps (the pleasurable type of goosebumps of course).
The Crystal Room: I most loved this room. Crystals are known for relieving stress and anxiety. The crystal room has Himalayan crystals on show on the wall that have been sourced from various countries to promote ultimate relaxation. Just feeling the brightly lit crystal is relaxing on its own. The crystals also work to purify the air.
The Garden Room: This room mimics the garden of Eden. The room with its lush plants surely offers the most exotic massage experience. In tune with nature minus any sinful lust.
The Candle Room: This room made me think of having a massage on the beach. The room offers a romantic beach-like setting with candles, sea shells and sea sand. This is ideal for Joburgers as we don't get to see the sea as often we would like to. The room can fool our senses into thinking we at the beach experiencing only the best massages possible.
Relaxation/ Chill room: Guests who spend all day at the spa are directed to the chill room. The room has a vibrating bed that vibrates to the sound of the music played on the big screen. There is also a tree in the room. When the spa was built the tree was in the room so the owner thought, 'Why not use the room and stay in touch with nature.'
Each room has a shower or bath to get clean after the massage. This is a plus for me since after feeling truly relaxed it is a mission to go a separate bathroom to rinse off and change. Having a bathroom in the room you've just had a massage in makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Some rooms have Jacuzzi and the Rasul shower as well.
The Massage Ritual
What I liked about the Fusionista spa is they had a set massage ritual that every client has to go through before the actual massage commences. The ritual made the massage seem more structured and less haphazard. Each guest gets to chose an aromatic candle for their massage. The candle releases an incredible fragrance during the actual massage which is yet another element that offers stimulation for the senses. I chose the MY SERENITY candle and Naby chose the orange and cinnamon candle for his massage.
Thereafter guests are directed to the floor basins to have their feet rinsed. I loved this idea of the foot cleanse prior to the massage. It allows you to get a feel of your therapist's hands on your skin before the actual massage. A hand towelette is used to cleanse the hands. This cleansing ritual puts the therapist at ease knowing they are working on clean feet and hands. Its also relaxing knowing you going into a massage room with cleansed feet and hands. Guest are given slippers to wear before they are directed to their relevant massage room.
My Massage Room
I was direct to the Koi Mist room for my massage. The room feels like a floating island surrounded by lush trees and alluring plants. The floor is entirely made of glass and beneath it is water. The water contains a variety of Koi fish that float around underneath your feet. I personally don't think pictures or even videos can do this room justice. The room makes you feel as if you have gotten lost in the amazon but found paradise. The sounds of nature, hooting owls, rustling leaves and refreshing wind filter through the sound system adding that extra sense stimulation and making one feel entirely disconnected from reality and more in tune with their natural mind. There is also scented mist and fire which adds to the overwhelming ambiance. Fire and mist are both elements of nature and it was rather fitting to include these elements as decor features in the room. It's hard not to be lost for words when you are in this room. I remained awe-struck throughout this massage. Nature has been so holistically captured in the form of this room that you cannot help but fall in love with the room itself.
Speaking of love, David informed us that many proposals took place in the Koi Mist room. I included the weddings label to this post as I personally feel that it would be the ideal room for a proposal. Too bad Nabeel and I are already married as after my visit even I wish someone proposed to me in that room just before we had massages.
The Massage
We we treated to the 60 minute aromatherapy massage. The reason why we wanted to try this particular type of massage is because we went for the same type of massage when on Honeymoon in Thailand. The aromatherapy massage offered by Fusionista is different from the authentic aromatherapy massage as it comprises of a mixture of the traditional Thai massage, the Swedish massage and the Ayurvedic Indian massage. Therefore it draws in massage techniques and aspects from various countries. Nabeel was excited that he finally could compare another massage to the one mind-blowing one hat we experienced in Thailand. He had to conclude after his treatment that the Fusionista massage certainly was more pleasurable than the one he experienced in Thailand.
My therapist hands were gentle as I gathered when she did my foot cleanse prior to the massage. Therefore I opted for a medium pressure massage. The treatment is wonderful. It certainly is 60 minutes of sheer bliss. The price of R 400 is well worth the treatment. The beauty part is most massages at Fusionista are so well priced that you can rest assured not to feel any stress of reducing your bank balance by a hefty amount. The massage doesn't leave you feeling bruised and batted but surely relaxed and revived. During the back massage you get the scent of the candle as you ooze away into thoughts of relaxation and the feeling of the initial slumber stages that engulfs you. The nature related sound effects provokes further contentment and peace. You feel every knot being loosened and every pressure point being gently pressed. My favoruite part of the massage was the head massage. Having suffered a sinus pain headache earlier that day, it was delightful to get an Indian head rub. My scalp felt relaxed and well attended to.
After the massage you left alone to shower and dress before you leave the spa feeling refreshed.
Could Fusionista be your heaven on earth???
